Two wheeled walker (rollator)

Two wheeled or dual wheeled walking frames are very popular and they come in narrow regular and wide widths to accommodate different sized individuals. They are made from a simple aluminum tubular frame and have four legs.

A dual wheeled walker is the simplest type of walking frame featuring wheels and it requires no brakes and it is simple to operate and become familiar with. Like a standard (wheel-less) walker, the two wheeled walker is normally intended for indoor use only.

How it works

The wheels (which are small castors) are located on the two front legs and the walker works by simply lifting up the rear legs and pushing the frame forward on the front wheeled legs. The front legs will normally be slightly longer than the rear legs and this makes tilting the frame forward (to lift the back legs off the ground) very easy. To stop the walker, or to keep it in a static position, all that is required is the lowering of the two rear (wheel-less) legs. Once these legs are in contact with the ground the walker cannot roll or slide, i.e. it is secure.

All two wheeled walking frames will have easy-clean plastic hand grips and they can be purchased in height and width dimensions to suit all shapes and sizes. The tips of the rear legs are finished with a non slip rubber that is hard wearing and does not produce marks or scratches.

The frame of the walker is normally made from aluminium and most walkers will have variable height adjustment with a range of about 70mm (3 inches) to 100mm (4 inches).

Many two wheeled walkers will fold or disassemble for easy carriage.
