Toilet gel cushion
A toilet or commode gel cushion is a special gel filled cushion that is placed on top of a toilet seat. These cushions can also be used with a commode, bidet or shower seat. They are normally "one size fits all".
How they work and what they do
The gel cushion is made from a polyurethane casing that surrounds the gel which, in turn, is held in internal pockets (called baffles). These baffles keep the gel in place and prevent it from being squeezed out from the areas where the bones or buttocks bear on it.
The special gel can mould itself to the shape and contours of the person sitting on it and it has soft padded texture.
The result is that a hard toilet seat is given a much softer feel and this will significantly improve its comfort for anyone who finds a standard seat hard or uncomfortable to sit on for any period of time.
These gel cushions are durable and can be wiped clean with a damp cloth. They are sized to fit a regular toilet seat and they normally have a maximum weight bearing capacity. (This needs to be checked for anyone with bariatric needs.)
Who can benefit from these gel cushions
They are most commonly used by older people who have less body fat (i.e. natural padding) around their lower bodies and upper legs. People fitting into the bariatric category may see them as an alternative to a bariatric toilet seat.
