Standards and warranties
There are different regulations and standards that apply to stairlifts in different territories around the world. You should ensure that any lift that you consider buying complies with the relevant standards in your country. In the EU, Australia and the USA this should not be a problem.
UK regulations
In the UK the appropriate British Safety Standard covering stairlifts is BS5776. All stair lifts and stairlift installations should comply with this standard. If they do not, the supplier or fitter will be breaking the law.
USA regulations
In the USA there are no national regulatory bodies controlling the fitting of these appliances and this means that you will need to consult your supplier or an official of your state. Some states are very lenient when it comes to stairlift installation whilst others, e.g. Washington, have strict regulatory control regarding who fits these appliances.
Other territories
If you live outside of the UK or USA, then you should apprise yourself of any regulations or controls that apply. If you use a supply and fit company (which is the norm) they will be able to inform you of any relevant controls. They will also be liable for any breaches.
Stairlift Warranties
You should make sure that you get a suppliers, fitters or manufacturers warranty with free site call out for at least 12 months.
Most stairlifts are reliable and have long life spans, however if there is a problem it will normally arise within the first few months of use. Make sure that your warranty covers parts, labour, "repair on site" and emergency site call outs (all at no extra cost to you).
