Roll up ramp
Roll up ramps (sometimes called a "roll-a-ramp") are one of the more recent innovations in ramps design and they have numerous advantages over most of the other ramp-access alternatives.
The biggest advantage that a roll up ramp has its ability to roll-up and store in a very small space, this makes it ideal for transportation and quick assembly and disassembly.
How they work
These ramps are made from a series of high tensile lightweight aluminium panels (or sections) that are interlinked with a folding hinge design. They are very strong, yet simple to set up.
Each panel is able to fold against the adjacent panels either side of it and, with a very narrow panel tread width, this enables the ramp to quite literally roll up around itself. The rolled up ramp can then be stored in a bag or case and stowed away whilst taking up a minimum amount of room.
To use this kind of ramp you simply take it out of its bag and unroll it. Special guard rails then attach to the sides of the interlinked panels and the ramp is ready for use in a matter of seconds.
Like all good ramps a roll up ramp should have a safe all weather non slip surface. Most ramps of this format are of a broad (and not a twin channel) construction which makes them ideal for wheelchairs and 3 or 4 wheeled mobility scooters.
Roll-up ramps are available that can take a combined load of well over 600 pounds making them a robust and easy to set up mobility accessory. They can be carried in a car, train or plane and stored horizontally or stood on their rolled up edge vertically. Because of their popularity they are also comparatively cheap to buy.
The appearance and construction of roll up ramps varies considerably between manufacturers. Some of these ramps have a very compact lightweight design whilst others are more structural and take up more space when folded away.
