Threshold ramp

Threshold ramps are special ramps that are intended for a single specific use, namely to enable a wheelchair user to get across the threshold of a building.

For this reason they are most commonly permanent fixtures at the main property entrance for wheelchair (and sometimes mobility scooter) owners. Temporary threshold ramps can make a property "wheelchair access enabled" for any disabled visitors.

Construction

Although quite short in length, threshold ramps are usually sectional in construction allowing their length and incline to be tailored to the threshold to which they are being fitted. Once assembled, the separate sections fit together to provide a ramp of constant incline that can match any reasonable height of threshold.

Different manufacturers use different mechanical locking mechanisms to interconnect the sections and most threshold ramps are self supporting, i.e. they are a proper ramps and not a suspended walkway between two points at different levels.

As a generalisation, each section is approximately 3 feet wide by one foot in length (about 305 mm) and produces a rise in height of one inch (about 25 mm). Shorter sectional lengths are available, but these result in a greater incline which requires more effort to scale.

As an example, a 3 foot long ramp will produce a rise in height of 3 inches.

Ramps of this type are usually made from aluminium.
