Large button phone
For many people of advancing years or with a degree of finger dexterity restriction (e.g. resulting from arthritis etc), tapping the numbers out on a phone key pad can be difficult and sometimes impossible.
The small keypad, combined with the small numbers, make a standard cordless phone awkward and cumbersome to hold and use and this can restrict contact with friends and family. A mobile phone can be even more of a challenge. - Not a desirable situation.
Bigger buttons
The solution to this problem is to buy a large buttoned phone. This is a phone where the buttons are enlarged to make them easier to read and to press. Similar or equivalent large buttoned devices are available on items like TV, DVD and audio remote controls, plus calculators as well as computer keyboards (see large key computer keyboard) page.
Large button phones are normally found on landlines, but some mobile phone manufacturers also make a larger keypad phone with enlarged numbers and letters (though these are still much smaller than their equivalent land line alternatives).
Most large button phone landlines tend to have a cord rather than be cordless and this is because the larger keypad is housed on the phone base rather than on the inside of the phone itself. This allows for much larger buttons than would be possible if the button pad were built into the phone itself.
A further addition to the digital display versions of these phones is larger numbers and characters on the readable screen. This makes the displays easier to understand.
It is also possible to buy phones that give an audible confirmation of each number dialled, thereby confirming that the correct digits were pressed.
