Mobility scooters - Relevant legislation

UK (Great Britain)

In the United Kingdom there are two classifications that apply to mobility scooters. They are class 2 and class 3.

For precise information regarding the way in which mobility scooters are designated in the United Kingdom please see this dvla classification page provided by the UK government.

Insurance, whilst advisable, is not required by law in the UK (March 2010).

At present (March 2010) there is no proficiency test or safe driving test applicable to mobility scooters, however, discussions are taking place that may lead to a statutory test becoming law at some point in the future.

With reference to the last two items, a number of people, both drivers and pedestrians have been injured (and killed) by mobility scooters. It is therefore advisable and responsible to ensure that you can safely drive your scooter before you use it in public.
