High back and high seat chairs
Seats that have a higher than average seat level plus an extended backrest can fulfil a number of important functions that help both elderly and mobility challenged individuals.
These seats will usually have strong solid armrests that can be used to help in the sitting and standing action.
This type of easy chair is most commonly used by people who find it difficult or uncomfortable to bend their knees or backs. The advantage to this style of chair is that the elevated height of the seat section means that the knees do not have to bend beyond 90 degrees. When this is combined with the extended backrest and the solid armrests it becomes a much easier seat to sit down in and stand out of than the typical easy chair.
Another advantage to these high seat and high backed chairs is the seated support that they offer. Their long but comparatively upright backrest is not only supportive, it also encourages good posture rather than a slouching or lazy sitting position. This means that these chairs are good for the back and the spine and that they actively encourage a good sitting position.
Most high chairs of this kind look similar to traditional easy chairs, but with a greater overall height and normally (although not always) the addition of an open base where the chair legs are visible. This is because having an open chair leg design disguises the extra height of the seat and the elongated backrest.
Riser recliner high backed chairs
High seat and backed chairs also come as riser recliner (lift and tilt) chairs where a remote control unit elevates and then tips the seat of the chair forward. This motorised action removes much of the bending and muscular effort required to sit down and stand up and this makes these chairs convenient for anyone who finds this kind of exertion problematic.
Lift and tilt chairs have a seat that can be lowered to a standard level so that they look like any other regular living room chair when the rise and recline motion is not in operation. For more information about riser recliner chairs please see this rise and recline page.
