Portable hair washing basin
A hair washing basin can be of great value when it comes to washing the hair of someone who is bed bound, or who cannot travel to a hair salon or bend over a sink or wash basin in a home.
The portable wash basin can be used to wash the hair of someone whilst they are lying down in a bed. This means that it becomes invaluable for anyone with major mobility restrictions. The basin is placed behind and under the head in the position normally occupied by a pillow.
There are two different types of portable or temporary hair washing basins.
- The first is an inflatable version made from vinyl.
- The second is a preformed lightweight tray made from plastic.
Both are of equal merit, however they work in slightly different ways and one type will suit certain situations better than the other.
Inflatable washing basins can be easily stored and carried when they are not inflated and their inflation is normally very easy (i.e. it can be done without a mechanical pump and by mouth). These basins also have soft cushiony edges, by virtue of them being filled with air, however care needs to be taken to ensure that the weight of a head and neck does not cause them to distort and leak.
Hair washing trays are solid and have a fixed shape. They are not flexible like inflatable vinyl basins, however some of them are designed in such a way as to incorporate a drain or spout at one side to allow water to run off. This means that a bucket or similar vessel can be placed to the side of a bed (under the run-off spout) enabling used water to drain away. This has the dual effect of removing the quantity of water that can be used during rinsing and of making the empty tray basin easier to carry once the washing is complete (i.e. it is empty).
