Mobility scooters - Folding mobility scooters

Folding mobility scooters are ideal if the scooter needs to be transported from one destination to another by car, bus, train or plane. This is particularly relevant if the owner frequently uses a car to get to different destinations from which the scooter will then becomes the primary means of transportation. They are also ideal for days out.

Folding scooters fold up to reduce the amount of storage room that they take up. This enables them to fit into storage a compartment into which a regular scooter would not fit.

For this reason they are invaluable for anyone who needs a mobility scooter in multiple locations, or for anyone who travels to work by car or train and needs to be able to quickly and effortlessly make their scooter "temporarily" storable.

Features of folding scooters

Here are the main features that distinguish a folding scooter from a standard mobility scooter.

Most fold-up mobility scooters are designed with the intention that in their folded and disassembled state they will fit into the boot (trunk) of a car.

Most folding scooters are smaller than standard scooters and they also have a much lighter construction. This makes them easier to handle, move and store. They tend to be shorter in length and narrower in width than a regular scooter. However, with modern lightweight materials and strong chassis designs this does not make these scooters any less sturdy or agile.

Many folding scooter systems will disassemble into as many as four different components enabling the scooter as a whole to lie in a comparatively flat position. Battery removal is usually simple and disassembly and reassembly is normally quick and straightforward and does not require any special skills.

Despite the folding and disassembling nature of these scooters they are still strong and robust and some models can carry a passenger and baggage with a combined weight of up to 20 stone (280 pounds). They offer all the features of fixed scooters, but with the flexibility of easy site to site transportation.

The slightly smaller size of these fold-up scooters actually makes them more manoeuvrable and results in them having very tight turning circles and being more dexterous on narrow paths or in shopping aisles, indoor malls etc.

You can buy folding mobility scooters that are suitable for road use and adjustable chairs and storage baskets are available on nearly all models.
