Urine bed bottles
Bed bottles can be either a short term or a long term solution for anyone who is bed bound or who may have trouble getting to a bathroom in certain situations (e.g. if a toilet call is required, but no facilities are available). Modern bed bottles are a reusable and hygienic aid.
These devices come in a number of formats. Some are designed for men and others are designed for women, whilst and increasing number are either unisex or come with dual attachments for both genders. In both cases the neck of the bottle is angled to facilitate easy use.
Most of the “bottle” based urinal aids take the form of a bottle or receptacle of some kind combined with a spout and they have a typical capacity of about one litre. Many also have a measure (i.e. they are calibrated) so that liquid output can be evaluated if necessary.
Most designs now have an anti reflux feature, i.e. liquid can only go in and not spill back out. Anti reflux designs are always ready to use and they do not require a cap to be applied between uses. (They are completely spill proof.) Removing the contents of these bottles is achieved by releasing a screw or child proof cap at the rear of the bottle and this enables the contents to be poured out normally.
In the case of non anti reflux bottles, a cap with be required and this may be a screw or clip-on cap.
Both types of bottle will have a handle incorporated into their design and they should be autoclave friendly (i.e. capable of being sterilized by high pressure steam cleaners).
Portable female urinal and urinal bottles
For a whole range of reasons, including being bed ridden or immobilised, it may not always be possible to get to the bathroom.
When this situation affects a lady there is the option to use a female urinal. This takes the form of a bottle with a special spout or entry point designed to suit the female anatomy.
These female urinals can hold anything from 300ml to 1 litre with 500ml being typical. They are made from a plastic and once used can be emptied, rinsed out and reused.
Most of these urinals are manufactured from a clear plastic that allows the user to see how full the container is and some have a handle for ease of use.
A variation of the urinal bottle is a urinal funnel that connects to a bag. The funnel drains to the bag via a tube which can then be detached and emptied. This is ideal for those wanting to pass water whilst standing up.
Most of these urinals can be used in either a standing or a seated posture and many can be cleaned using heat sterilization systems.
