Bathroom accessories
There are many different accessories that can be used to modify and improve the accessibility of a bathroom. The other pages of this section describe many of these accessories, aids and mobility devices, but here is a brief summary of some of the categories that they fit into.
- The most basic bathroom accessory, aimed at making this room more disability-able, is the rail. There are many different types of rail from single grab rails that are mechanically fixed to a wall, to clamp style rails that can be temporarily attached to different components and parts of a building or a room. Adding rails to a bathroom makes the mobility challenged user feel more confident and can remove the need for the support of a carer.
- Matting, padding and cushioning form another cheap and easy to apply level of bathroom modification. All of these surface treatment items are intend to convert hard walls, floor, and fitting finishes into more ductile and protective surfaces that can offer greater levels of comfort, or protect someone in the event of a fall. Examples include protective bathroom floor matting and cushions for use inside a bath tub.
- Bathroom suite modification accessories are another important and cost saving area. These accessories are intended to convert standard bathroom fittings like a bath or a toilet into easy-to-use bathroom items by adding clever aids like bath lifts or toilet lifter seats. Accessories like these can remove the need for replacing an existing bathroom suite with a special needs one and in so doing they save money and normalise the home.
- Additional fitting like shelving and utility or stick holders, positioned at convenient levels and in strategic places, can make the bathroom a friendlier environment.
