Bariatric toilet seat

A bariatric toilet seat is simply a toilet seat that is larger and wider than a regular toilet seat. Consequently it has a greater weight bearing surface and, as such, it spreads the weight of the person sitting on it over a more extensive area. The result is that for a larger person a bariatric seat is more comfortable to sit on.

Difference between a regular toilet seat and a bariatric version

A bariatric toilet seat can be up to 75% larger (in area) than a standard toilet seat and this extra surface area comes from increasing the width of the seating surface. This means that the seat will project both outwards and over the inner bowl of the toilet more than a standard seat.

Other features of these extra large seats include a comfort contoured seat surface and this, combined with the increased seating size, result in this type of seat being very comfortable.

These large seats also increase the height of the seating surface. This is a result of the seat having to be deeper to accommodate the extra seat width and the weight of a larger person.

A bariatric toilet seat is prevented from moving, slipping, or sliding by the use of rubber bumpers that hold it in place against the toilet pan.

These seats are manufactured from a strong lightweight, durable and easy clean plastic. They have a long lifespan and they can be fitted to most regular toilet pans, both round and oval. They use the same type of hinges as standard seats.

Who can benefit

The type of person who will benefit from these oversized toilet seats include those with bariatric needs where a larger support surface is desirable.

However older people may find them advantageous and most people will find this style of seat more comfortable than a much narrower regular seat.
