Thai massage

Thai massage is a recognised form of medicine in Thailand where it is viewed as a complete holistic treatment that can address a number of health problems. It has been around for over 2000 years and is now practiced in the west.

In the USA and Europe Thai massage is more commonly found in health spas or complementary therapy clinics. It is perceived as beneficial, but not as a medical treatment.

What is Thai massage

Thai massage involves deep massage combined with body stretching.

During a typical session the recipient will find their body being pulled and positioned into numerous yoga like postures. Whilst in these positions rhythmical massage motions will be affected on different parts of the body. A firm pressure is applied during this procedure.

Normally the therapist will hold the receiver in position whilst affecting the massage and the application of the massage motions may be with either the hands or the feet. Other elements of this type of massage include the stretching of the body and the pulling of the fingers and toes. It is not uncommon for the masseur to walk along the recipients back as part of the treatment.

In keeping with a number of other therapies, Thai massage takes account of meridian-like channels of energy that run through the body.

A full Thai massage

A complete Thai massage can take over two hours and will see the receiver's body moved into various positions as the massage is applied.

The massage itself can be quite firm and some of the postures into which the receiver's body are pulled can be quite challenging. This "full" massage has a rhythm and a fixed set of positions and massage movements that should be accomplished.

This type of massage is undertaken with the patient lying on a firm surface. This may be a mat or a bench like mattress.

Benefits

The benefits of Thai massage can include the release of physical and mental stress, a greater ability to relax, and superior bodily flexibility. This form of massage and manipulation is claimed to have a deeper effect that other forms of massage, e.g. Swedish.

Contrary to what many people assume, during the entire Thai massage experience the receiver remains dressed in loosely fitting clothing. No oils or other aids are used.

In the western world, some variations of Thai massage are used to treat, specific parts of the body, sports injuries, bodily function etc.
