Pilates
Pilates were invented by Joseph Pilates in the last century and they are now practiced widely throughout the western world. Joseph Pilates alternatively named this collection of exercises as "controlology".
What are Pilates
Pilates are based around a series of exercises (originated by their creator) that strengthen both the body and the mind. Pilates use controlled movements to develop muscular strength and also to increase the controlling relationship between the body and the mind. This is because the exercises are preformed whilst giving complete attention (concentration) to the body.
Most Pilates exercises take the form of making the body work against gravity or some other resistant object. The movements that result are normally quite minimal, but this does not mean that they are not difficult to perform in a correct and controlled manner.
Many of the Pilates exercises that are commonly used today are intended to strengthen and improve the health of the back. One reason for this is because the concentration used to perform Pilates results in the isolation and consequent exercising of specifically identified muscles (and their movements). This means that a group of Pilates can be targeted for a given problem or weakness.
Where can you do Pilates
Pilates group sessions are held in many venues from complementary therapy clinics to sports centres and gyms. It is also possible to see a Pilates' instructor on a one to one basis. Some Pilates exercises may also be given to patients seeing other practitioners like physiotherapists and osteopaths.
With individual or group sessions, an instructor will demonstrate and explain each exercise precisely. This will involve demonstrating the exercise and explaining the sensation or feeling that should be experienced if the exercise is performed correctly. Part of this process is the ability to identify and exercise only the muscles to which the Pilates are being directed.
Once instructed in the correct way to perform a series of Pilates the patient will be given a daily regime of practice. In the case of some of these exercises it may take some repetitions before the exercise is carried out correctly.
Benefits of Pilates
Pilates can be used to improve general health, increase muscular strength, improve posture, increase body-mind control and increase flexibility.
In most cases no special equipment is required and the exercises can be performed in a short space of time. This makes them very adaptable to everyday life.
Where to find a therapist
There is no official or recognised regulation for Pilates, so recommendations or reputable complementary treatment clinics are usually the best source of a Pilates instructor. Organisations like the United States Pilates Association can also be used for guidance.
