Lumbar supports

The lumbar region is the lower part of the back between the pelvis and the diaphragm and this part of the spine is made up of five of the largest vertebrae in the spine. This is a moveable part of the spine and as such it is susceptible to problems and injuries, many of which can be assisted by wearing a lumbar support.

This lower lumbar region of the back has many muscles and a large degree of movement in all directions which increases this area of the body's inclination to injury and strains. It also has a natural inward curve and it is important that this curve is retained.

The lumbar region is home to a collection of nerves generally referred to as the sciatic nerve which run down the legs to the feet and which can be the cause of severe discomfort if aggravated, e.g. by a condition like disc herniation.

All told it is not surprising that many people have, at some point in their life, an injury, strain or irritation in the lumbar region of their back and the wearing of a lumbar support may be a solution while the problem persists.

What a lumbar support does

A lumbar support can provide relief from discomfort by using the support's in built compression against muscles, joints or discs. The support can be worn during rehabilitation from an injury, or as a preventative measure during everyday activities or sport.

Most lower back supports are made from an elasticized and breathable fabric and they come in a range of different size options. Additional adjustable side straps are available on some of these supports, as are structural stays that can add to the level of restraint that can be applied.

Lumbar supports are usually available in a choice of colours.
