Indian head massage

Indian head massage is a complementary therapy that originated in India over 1000 years ago. It is a holistic therapy.

Indian head massage can be used to relieve pain or discomfort associated with the shoulders and the upper back. It can also be an effective remedy for other symptoms such as headaches, eyestrain and even sinusitis.

How it is applied

Indian head massage sees not just the head, but also the shoulders, neck, back, upper arms, face and ears gently massaged in a rhythmical way. The sensation is often described as firm but gentle and it is a relaxing experience for the recipient.

Most therapists will carry out this massage in a clinic or a specially prepared room, however, because the therapy does not require the patient to lie down or undress it can be undertaken in any environment.

Finding a therapist and what to expect

Many Indian head massage therapists will also offer other massage related therapies like body massage, hot stone massage and body wrapping. Each confers different advantages and offers a differing sensation to the recipient.

A treatment of this kind could be a single session, or it could be part of a longer treatment or even a relaxation and de-stressing regime.

Indian head massage therapists may work out of clinics or operate independently. In some countries there are formal qualifications available (such as diplomas), however it is always a good idea to obtain as much information as possible about any therapist (in any discipline) before undertaking treatment from them.
