Incontinence Alarm
An incontinence or bed wetting alarm is intended to notify the person using it that they have become incontinent and, by doing so immediately, they are able to take action.
There are two types of incontinence warning aid. The first is worn in a pad that will fit between two pairs of pants. It can be used during the day when the wearer is active and it is not noticeable, either by the wearer or anyone else. It is comfortable to wear and does not disrupt everyday activities.
The second type of alarm is one that is used during sleep and this incontinence alarm is laid out over the mattress and mattress protector. The alarm unit can be placed on a bedside cabinet for alerts in the event of bed wetting.
The alarm itself will normally have two options that can be used independently or together. The first option is an audible signal in the form of a beep or similar sound, whilst the second is a silent vibration which may be more desirable in certain situations where discretion is valued.
How they work
The alarms are triggered by a simple moisture sensor that detects any incontinence and sounds the alarm (or causes the silent vibrating mode to start).
In the case of children and those with none medical bedwetting incontinence, the occurrence of bedwetting followed immediately by the alarm can condition the brain to recognise the need to wake up and take a bathroom break. For this reason there are many who feel that this type of alarm can also help in toilet training.
In the case of portable (bodily worn) incontinence alarms, these are available in a wireless format that uses batteries.
There are many companies who produce these alarms and this means that there is a wide choice of design, size and price range available. The cheapest portable models start at anything from 40 US Dollars or 30 UK pound Stirling.
