Ankle support and brace
There are many different types of ankle support targeted for different injuries, ailments and afflictions. They start with the basic multidirectional fabric sleeve that offers compression and heat, and end with a structural brace that uses shells or struts and may even have pockets or bladders filled with air or gel.
Like the majority of anatomical supports, ankle supports can be used during recovery from surgery or injury, to assist and support an ongoing chronic condition, or as a preventative and reassuring measure when participating in regular activities or sports.
Most ankle braces and supports have a high level of adjustment to ensure the correct fit and they will normally be washable.
A basic ankle sleeve
The most basic type of ankle support is a sleeve that provides compression and support along with heat retention. Sleeves like this can be worn with normal shoes and they do not restrict movement.
They are suitable for weak ankles and minor injuries to ligaments and tendons. They can have an open or closed heel and they should be washable and made from a material treated to make it odour resistant (antibacterial).
For most simple ankle support sleeves, one size fits all.
Adjustable ankle sleeve
The next step up from a basic sleeve is a sleeve that offers greater compression and some adjustment and directional focus of that compression. This is done by having one or more hook and loop (Velcro) straps that enable both pressure adjustment and a degree of targeting of that pressure.
These supports are made from elasticized multidirectional fabrics and they are suitable for ankle instability and use during rehabilitation from more severe ankle injuries or surgery. They can also be used as preventative supports during running and walking activities.
For supports related to injuries, rehabilitation or relief from pain in the other joints and muscles of the leg see knee supports and thigh supports.
